‘Thanks to Empire Magazine, we have a few items of what to expect from the upcoming Joker origin story (minus the spoilers) directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix.
We already know that the movie is going to be an origin story but what we don’t know is how the director is going to deal with a subject that doesn’t very much have an entire origin story in the DC Comics. The Joker was first introduced in Detective Comics #168 (1951) as Red Hood – a criminal who, during his final heist, vanishes after leaping into a vat of chemicals to escape Batman.
“I just love the energy that a disruptor brings,” he says when asked what appeals to him about The Joker. “So I thought, ‘A Joker origin story would be cool; nobody’s done that.’ I read comics as a kid, I knew enough about Frank Miller and the Dark Knight series, and The Killing Joke. I also knew that he didn’t really have an origin story, so I thought, ‘Oh Jesus, are we able to do that, is it legal?”
Another important find is the person before the Joker’s existence, Arthur Fleck. According to Phillips, Fleck a.k.a. Joker, is a very troubled man with a lot of issues and praises Joaquin Phoenix for delivering a breathtaking performance. Phillips adds that he thinks the character is a romantic and hopes that the viewers start the movie with complete empathy towards the character until they don’t feel they’d want to be on Fleck’s side anymore as the movie progresses.
The last thing on this list that you should know about the Joker movie is that it will not be comic accurate, which might disappoint a few DC fans.
“We didn’t follow anything from the comic books,” Phillips says, “which people are gonna be mad about. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”
Joker is set to open in cinemas this October 2019.
