The new trilogy will veer away from the Skywalker stories, meaning a whole different story and new characters.
Rian Johnson has been assigned to helm a new trilogy in the Star Wars Movie Universe. According to Lucasfilm, he will both write and direct the first installment. Producer Ram Bergman will collaborate with him on the new project. And that the new trilogy will veer away from the Skywalker stories, meaning a whole different story and new characters. This new assignment can only mean that Lucasfilm really liked The Last Jedi.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
For a studio, that has already fired three directors and tends in hiring and keeping more experienced ones, Johnson is an exception. Although, he isn’t as fresh as Colin Trevorrow, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, he isn’t as experienced as Abrams and Ron Howard either.
This news can only mean more Star Wars movies… that is until people get sick of it.
Meanwhile, Johnson’s The Last Jedi premieres in December 15 (13 in other countries). And Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, has a release date of May 25, 2018.
