It’s been 5 years since a movie that isn’t a tent-pole film and 16 years with it’s genre has had topped the box-office . And not to mention the small amount budget compared to what it reaped in the box-office! Other filmmakers, take note, this is how you make money next time!
There are some reasons on why the award-winning war-drama, American Sniper, is on the NO. 1 box-office hit of 2014.
LA Times notes that the film captured US patriotism and has a wide variety of audiences. From art-house fans, war-action buffs, and long-time veteran fans of Clint Eastwood and the younger millennial devotees of Bradley Cooper.
The character-driven film was based on a memoir by Chris Kyle ( portrayed by Bradley Cooper in the film) titled American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History. The story accounts the life “Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle’s who’s pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.”
Its quite rare that a war-drama had topped on the box-office beating movies about revolutions in fantasy-dystopian worlds (Huger Games: Mockingjay Part I), lovable superhero misfits trying to save the world (Guardians of the Galaxy), and movie hero sequels ( X-Men, Spider-Man, Captain America: Winter Soldier).
