After garnering praise for his terrifying short film, Lights Out director might get his big break in the comic book-movie universe as Shazam helmer.
The Wrap reports that Shazam is making its way out of development hell with talks of David F. Sandberg possibly helming the project. This film has been long overdue since our first report of Dwayne Johnson tweeting about his engagement of the project in 2014. Johnson is reported to take the role as the villain Black Adam. No further news has emerged about Johnson’s role since last September 2014 when he took to Twitter posting cryptic messages about the movie .
Shazam, aka Captain Marvel, is a fictional superhero appearing in DC Comics. He can transform into superhero form by saying “Shazam” and possesses the powers of six mythological gods.
Sandberg captured Insidious director James Wan’s attention when he won as Best Director in Vimeo’s Who’s There Film Challenge in 2013 for his short film Lights Out. By 2016, Sandberg directed his first feature film based on his short with James Wan as producer.
Projects under his directorial belt include another short called Attic Panic and the sequel to John R. Leonetti’s Annabelle which comes out this August 2017.
